One week on and thankfully things have settled down a bit and we have had a bit of time to think about how the race went from our perspective.
First of all we must say a VERY big thank you to all the volunteer Marshall's and water station helpers and Army Cadets and race officials and helpers who stood for hours in the most difficult weather conditions we can remember and gave support and encouragement to the runners. Many people emailed us about this (see comments section) asking us to pass on their thanks, this we will do but I am sure you will join us in saying how grateful we were to them all for giving up their time so you could complete the run in safety. Thanks once again.
We had quite a few comments pointing out some of the areas where perhaps we could do better next year, namely:
Route: Apologies for any confusion outside the ice rink where runners had to bear right - we forgot to Marshall that junction correctly and we will make sure it is properly sign posted and Marshalled next year. While there was one or two other comments on the route we will ensure that (manpower allowing) we will cover those areas as well.
Drinks: Because of the weather, one runner jokingly suggested we provide hot chocolate at the water stations, great idea, but I wonder how that would work with the one gulp in the mouth the rest over the head! (Sticky-up hair!) Seriously, another suggested bottles of water at the water stations instead of plastic cups. We have considered this before but the main problem is collecting discarded bottles afterwards as they tend to be scattered all over the course and we simply do not have the resources or time to go all the way around the course picking them up. Mind you, if every runner promised to carry their empty water bottle and dispose of it at the next water station .....
Goody bags and extras: We are very grateful for all the positive comments we have received about the goody bags, T-shirts, Beanies and medals. We try our best to please and this year I think we have managed to please most people - which is no mean feat! We even had some small T-shirts left! Thanks again for your comments.
Overall. Even the weather did not dampen spirits and while it is a very long day for us we enjoy it immensely as we are all runners and love the atmosphere generated by like minded people who are mostly running for the challenge or the fun of it. Thank you all for your continued support for this event and we look forward to seeing you all next year.
The date for the 2010 Half Marathon is now confirmed as Sunday 21st March.
